Chin Augmentation Q & A

What is chin augmentation?

Chin augmentation is a surgical procedure that uses implants to alter the appearance of the jaw and jawline, resulting in better symmetry and balance for the entire face and a more attractive profile overall. The primary purpose of a chin implant is to address a so-called weak chin or receding chin, and they can also be used to treat a chin that appears far too small in relation to the rest of the facial features. Because they “fill in” loose skin, chin implants can also reduce jowling, which can be quite substantial in those with smaller or receding chins.

How is the chin augmentation procedure performed?

Chin augmentation is performed as an outpatient procedure under either general anesthesia or using sedation with a local anesthetic to numb the area where the incision will be made. Once the patient is anesthetized, an incision will be made below the chin so any resulting scar will be hidden. The implant is carefully placed beneath the skin in a pocket created in the surrounding tissue. Depending on the type of implant being used, either sutures or screws can be used to hold the implant in place. After the implant has been properly positioned, the incision will be closed with sutures. A dressing may also be applied, but it usually is not necessary. Most chin implant procedures take under an hour to perform. Another option is to reposition the natural chin bone so that the chin assumes a more forward position.

How can I tell if a chin implant is right for me?

The best way to determine if chin augmentation could be a good solution to address specific concerns is to schedule an evaluation to learn about chin implants as well as other options. During the consultation, before-and-after photos can be used to get an idea of what kinds of results chin implant surgery can achieve.
