Rhinoplasty Q & A

What is rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure to change the appearance of your nose or to fix structural problems, especially after suffering damage due to an injury. Cosmetic rhinoplasty is an excellent choice when you want to make the following changes to your nose:

  • Reduce the overall size
  • Straighten a crooked nose
  • Change the bridge’s width
  • Adjust nostril size or shape
  • Remove a bump on the bridge
  • Eliminate a depression
  • Reshape the nose tip

Rhinoplasty can also make your nose appear more symmetrical.

Am I a good candidate for rhinoplasty?

Most patients are good candidates for rhinoplasty, but there’s one important criterion, and that’s your age. You can’t have nose surgery until your nasal structures are fully developed. If you have rhinoplasty too early, the surgery can interfere with your nose’s growth. Nasal tissues finish growing around the age of 15-16 in girls and 17-18 in boys.

If you’re considering rhinoplasty, it’s also important to be in good health and to have realistic expectations. Dr. TerKonda and his team take the time to talk with you about the changes you want and the results you envision to be sure they can be achieved with rhinoplasty.

What happens during a rhinoplasty procedure?

Dr. TerKonda may perform a closed or open rhinoplasty. During a closed procedure, the incision is made inside your nose. The incision is placed in the area between your nostrils during open rhinoplasty.

Whenever possible, Dr. TerKonda uses a closed procedure. But if you need open rhinoplasty, you can be assured that the scar will be small and placed in the contour of your nose, where it will barely be visible.

The surgical procedure typically includes sculpting the bone and cartilage to create your desired changes. In some cases, you may need additional cartilage taken from your ear or septum to build up the existing structures.

What should I expect after rhinoplasty?

You wear a splint to protect your nose while it heals. Most patients can get back to their normal activities in a week, but the healing process can continue for a year or longer. The tissues don’t fully stabilize until they completely heal.
